Once you have your data out of the big services and cleaned up, it needs to live somewhere you control. This guide covers moving your archive to Back into Google Photos.

Step by step

  1. Decide what you are re-uploading

    Re-uploading a cleaned, de-duplicated library is the point of this. Do it after Muletto has removed duplicates and repaired dates, not before.

  2. Upload the folders

    Open photos.google.com and drag your organized folders onto the page, or install Google Drive for desktop and turn on backup for that folder.

  3. Let it read the dates

    Google Photos uses the date stored in each file. If dates were missing from the original export, repair them in Muletto first or everything will appear as if taken today.

  4. Check the storage cost

    Uploads count against your Google account storage. A de-duplicated library is often considerably smaller, which is usually the reason for doing this.

  5. Confirm before deleting anything

    Compare the counts in Google Photos against the counts Muletto reported before removing your local copy.

Worth knowing

Google Photos does not merge duplicates for you on upload, so cleaning first genuinely saves storage.
Keep your own copy. Putting a library back into a cloud service should be a convenience, not your only copy.
